Dear Friends,
Below are slideshows of photos taken during
our recent trip May 16 to 23rd, 2011, to Haiti to work in our "new" HSFH
clinic located about 20 minutes drive west of Petit-Goave (P.G.). I was joined
by my friend Jane Winhall. This was Jane's third trip to Haiti and as
always where Jane was - children followed! We started our trip with a
late arrival into Port au Prince with plane difficulties in Montreal. Dr
Cherley was there with a reliable car and driver to get us to
Petit-Goave. It was my first arrival in the dark - so we could not see
the city well and the current status. In P.G. we stayed with a lovely
family - 15 in all!
Early the next morning we loaded up all the
supplies we had brought with us ready to see our location. Located on
the main "highway" it is ideally located with lots of exposure to many
communities and on a public "bus" route. As is usual people were already
lined up seeking care from the doctor. Cherley had arranged shelving
for our little store and for our clinic supplies. The clinic room
measures 19 by 21 square feet. The back room where the lab will be
functioning is 21 square feet. We spent the day organizing the supplies
according to expiry dates of supplies.
We are truly so
blessed to be the beneficiary of thousands of dollars worth of clinical
supplies. We must especially express our gratitude to the dental
representatives of the following companies who donated so generously -
Clinical Research, Densply, Discus, Germaphene, Henry Schein, Northern
Surgical, Kerr, Premier Dental, Colgate, 3M, and Maxill.
It is the
generosity of these dental companies which allows us to offer excellent
care for a greatly reduced price for the people of the area. Under the
direction of Dr. Cherley we are completely confident that the patients
are receiving the best care. Healthy Smiles For Haiti is also proud to
help support three people employed through HSFH. Dr Cherley, the
assistant Charlene, and the community animator who spreads the word
about our clinic. A dental school in Florida found us
through our web site and contacted us to permit one their students to do
his work term in our clinic. Jane was a great teacher for Clifford.
Clifford Dumond originated in Port au Prince but has done his post
secondary in Florida. We met Clifford the first day, ready to work!
After his three weeks he returns to graduate as an expanded duty
assistant. We wish you the very best Clifford.
It was good to
see that slowing Haiti is rebuilding after the destruction from the
earthquake in January 2010. It will always be a country with challenges
but life continues. Port au Prince still has massive areas overly
crowded with tents, with shacks built nearby to sell to the masses who
live nearby. Sanitation in these areas is of great concern.
One of the goals for us was to screen six and seven year olds for those
that needed sealants on their six year molars. We feel this is the best
preventive treatment to give the children. We walked to the nearby
elementary school and received a warm welcome from the principal and the
children. Clifford recorded the names and findings while Jane and I
examined in the classroom which was actually a very hot tent. Two by two
the children came for Jane & I to clean their teeth place the
sealants and apply a fluoride treatment. We were challenged by no
suction, and I had no water or air syringe or overhead light. This we
deal with, we are just happy to help others. The clinic is still in need to reliable electricity to be able to offer full service on a daily basis.
Dr
Cherley continues to do a great job treating patients with expertise
and caring and teaches young and not so young dental prevention. Our
relocated clinic is ideally situated with great exposure geographically
and with the word spreading through the local "animator" people are
coming and are leaving with smiles and that's what Healthy Smiles For
Haiti is all about.
