Healthy Smiles for Haiti Providing Preventive Dental Care & Services for the People of Haiti ![]() Our Latest Trip To Haiti MARCH 2008 On a recent to trip to Haiti I was blessed to have two special ladies join me in Haiti. Jennifer Dibben, laboratory technician and owner of Belasco Dental Studio in Waterdown and experienced in the challenges of providing Dental Care in a country with considerably less resources than Canada. Also joining us was Burlington Hygienist Jane Winhall, a recent graduate of the Canadian College of Dental Health in Burlington. We worked in the Thibeau Dental Clinic outside Cap-Haitien in the north of Haiti. It was recently revamped, with brand new equipment through a Matching Grant co-sponsored through the Burlington North Rotary Club along with the Mississauga Meadowvale Club. Dr. Cherely Policier is a Haitian University trained Dentist who provides care at the Thibeau Clinic on a full time basis. He is employed through Healthy Smiles For Haiti. It was a joy for we 3 ladies to work under his direction. Jane loved playing and working with the children of the area. Her main objective was to place sealants in the 7 and 8 years olds to prevent cavities from developing in their permanent molars. There was usually laughter coming from the room with her love for life clearly emerging with each child she lovingly cared for. Even at the end of the clinic day if Jane was there she was surrounded by happy little faces. Click here for a slideshow of Jane's visit. Another goal of ours was to provide dentures and partials for the older residents to restore a smile to their faces. With this in mind Jennifer brought many supplies donated by various dental companies and we got to work. We were challenged by the humidity affecting the setting of the materials, but in the end, we did treat many patients to give a smile that brought tears to my eyes. Click here for a slideshow of Jennifer's visit. Until now all artificial replacement teeth had to be flown to Port au Prince and then after several weeks the teeth would be placed. Now, Dr. Cherley can provide further care right in the Healthy Smiles clinic. One of our honoured guests, while there was the Arch Bishop of Cap-Haitien the Most Reverend Bishop Constance. This very gracious gentleman was most grateful for his care in the clinic and the ongoing care all residents are given from Healthy Smiles For Haiti. I invite you to have a look at the smiles – Click here for a slideshow of pictures which say more than a thousand words. I look forward to working at the clinic once again with Jennifer and Jane. Their dedication and commitment to our project is greatly appreciated. I think they have only just begun My final thanks is for Phélimps Jean Louis for his organizational skills, photography skills, baggage handling, laughter and exceptional care of the three Canadian ladies. FEBRUARY 2008
(getting ready for the trip just described) We will be going to Haiti in February of this year with two colleagues: Jane, a hygienist and recent graduate from the Canadian College of Dental Health
We will also be teaching 'preventative dental care' in the school beside the Thibeau clinic as well as taking family histories. These histories will help us to set up a sponsorship program. The goal is to seek financial assistance to provide dental treatment for people in Haiti who can't afford such treatment. We will soon be posting such requests for sponsorship on our web page. Mesi Anpil!
