Thibeau Dental Report: Oct 2007-Feb 2008 (in pdf)

The Rotary Club located in Jacmel, Haiti, and along with help from the Burlington North and Mississauga Rotary Clubs in Ontario, Canada, supports our dental clinic in Thibeau.  This clinic has undergone major renovation in September 2007 as you can see by clicking on:  Thibeau Clinic Photos

On Monday Sept 3 2007, Mr. Ray Trask, past president of the Burlington North
Rotary Club made his first visit to Haiti. It was a great joy to welcome him in Port au Prince. The next morning Dr. Cherley Policier, Phélimps Jean Louis, Ray and myself arose very early to fly to Cap Haitien. There we had the opportunity to meet with Sr Biane and visit the home of our little sponsor child Wildernise - also our representative for Healthy Smiles.

From there we headed out to Thibeau where Father Almyre gave us a warm welcome. We dropped our bags and drove about 20 minutes to the dental clinic. Since February, Father had installed the solar panels, inverter and batteries in preparation for the new equipment. Inside all the cartons were there awaiting our arrival. It wasn't long before Cherely was in the other room seeing patients, I was cleaning up and Ray & Phélimps started the assembly of the new patient chair, dentist chair, assistants chair and finally the dental unit with self contained compressor. We all held our breath until all the equipment was switched on and ran perfectly well!

On Wed again after a hearty breakfast, we headed back to the clinic where Ray began the assembly of the X-Ray unitPhélimps worked on refining the power supply. Cherely saw more patients and I unpacked all the boxes which had been sent down in the previous 2 years. Again the moment of truth - the X-Ray worked very well. Success !

Finally it was the great joy of erecting the new sign for the clinic. The local men did the job very well with the help of Father Almyre. It was a four year labour love  - but today it was all worth it!  The dental clinic is without doubt one of the very best in all of Haiti!

Rotary Club Jacmel, Haiti
On Thursday Sept 6 we left Thibeau to fly back to Port au Prince. From there we downsized our bags and took a public "tap tap ( oversized over crowded van) for a two hour journey across the peninsula to Jacmel. We had time for quick swim in the pool before being picked up to attend the Rotary meeting with our partner club in Jacmel. With great pride we showed the latest photos of the clinic taken the previous day. The room was filled with smiles at the great success! We concluded our meeting with the hopes that once again in the very near future we would collaborate again to repeat the process and develop a second Healthy Smiles dental clinic.
